The short answer
Most wedding photographers leaving HoneyBook end up choosing between four tools: Dubsado, Studio Ninja, 17hats, and Bower. The right one comes down to a single question. Do you want to build a system, or just book weddings?
Dubsado suits photographers who enjoy customizing workflows. Studio Ninja is photography-specific with the lowest entry price, though its Starter plan caps you at five active jobs. 17hats bundles everything into one $60-a-month plan. Bower is the simplest of the group, focused on inquiry-to-booking with account-free client links, at $19 a month for founding members.
This guide is published by Bower, the CRM built by a working wedding filmmaker. We'll be fair about where the others win. Pricing checked November 1, 2026.
Why do photographers leave HoneyBook?
Usually it's one of three things, and none of them is "HoneyBook is broken."
The first is price. HoneyBook raised its rates in 2025, and today Starter runs $29 a month and Essentials $49, both billed annually (HoneyBook pricing). If you shoot 25 weddings a year and mostly send contracts and invoices, that's a lot of subscription for a few documents per couple.
The second is that it does too much. HoneyBook is built for every kind of service business, from coaches to caterers. A wedding photographer ends up wading past features made for someone else to send a contract and a deposit invoice.
The third is planners. Some wedding planners get openly frustrated working through vendor HoneyBook projects. One planner on Reddit said they were sick of it after clicking through look-alike projects to figure out which vendor each one belonged to (Reddit thread). In HoneyBook's own community, photographers swapped workarounds for keeping a planner in the loop while the couple signs and pays (community thread). Both threads are a few years old, but the problem is timeless: the planner needs to see the contract, and the couple needs to sign it.
Planners refer photographers. Making their week harder is a bad trade.
HoneyBook alternatives compared
Annual cost is the clearest way to compare, since most of these discount yearly billing. Prices are published subscription rates as of November 1, 2026, before taxes and payment processing.

The alternatives, one by one
Bower: for photographers who just want to book weddings
Bower was built by a wedding filmmaker who found HoneyBook to be more than he needed, so it does one job: get a couple from inquiry to booked without you configuring anything first.
An inquiry becomes a Project. The conversation, wedding details, contract, invoices, and notes all live there. The planner gets a link to view the contract, the couple gets their own links to sign, and a parent paying the retainer gets the invoice. Nobody creates an account.
Where it falls short: Bower doesn't have a custom "if this, then that" workflow builder yet. It handles inquiry acknowledgments and payment reminders automatically, and configurable automation is planned for the next major update. If you need detailed automated sequences today, look at Dubsado Premier or HoneyBook Essentials.
Dubsado: for photographers who love building systems
Dubsado is the most customizable tool here. Premier gets you automated workflows, scheduling, public proposals, and Zapier, and the 21-day trial gives you full Premier access with no credit card (Dubsado pricing).
The catch is the setup. Dubsado rewards people who enjoy mapping out every step of a client's experience, and Dubsado even runs a directory of certified specialists you can hire to set it up for you. If you're the type who color-codes a shot list, you'll probably love it. If you just want to send a contract tonight, it can feel like homework.
Also worth knowing: the cheaper Starter plan has no automated workflows or scheduling and only one lead capture form, so most photographers coming from HoneyBook will want Premier.
Studio Ninja: for photography-specific features on a budget
Studio Ninja was built for photographers from day one, and it shows. It integrates with Pic-Time and ShootProof, includes contracts, questionnaires, payment schedules, and a client portal on every plan, and offers free data migration when you switch (Studio Ninja pricing).
The Starter plan is the cheapest option on this list at $160 a year, but read the fine print. It caps you at five active jobs and leaves out workflow automation. A wedding stays active for months between booking and delivery, so a working wedding photographer will outgrow five fast. Pro, at $270 a year, is the real comparison.
17hats: for one plan with everything included
17hats moved to a single all-inclusive plan in 2025: $60 a month, $600 a year, or $800 for two years, with the same features on every billing option (17hats pricing). No tiers means no wondering whether you picked the wrong one.
Its standard one-year subscription is the highest-priced annual plan in this comparison. The two-year option works out to $400 a year, and introductory discounts may lower the initial cost. Bank connect is a $5/month add-on. If you're a solo wedding photographer, you're paying for a general small-business suite.
Worth a mention: Pixieset Studio Manager
If you already deliver galleries through Pixieset, its Studio Manager handles contracts, invoices, questionnaires, and booking inside the same account, and there's a free plan to try it (Toolradar). It makes the most sense when you want galleries and admin under one login, less so if you deliver galleries somewhere else.
How to choose, based on how you actually work
Forget feature lists for a minute. Most photographers are paying for CRM features they've never opened.
If you'd describe yourself as "not a systems person," pick the tool with the least setup. That's Bower, or Studio Ninja if you'd like its free one-on-one training to walk you through setup.
If you book a lot of weddings with planners, look hard at how each tool handles a planner who needs to read the contract without signing it. Send a test contract to a friend playing the planner and see what they have to click through.
If you're booking 30 or more weddings a year and the follow-up emails are eating your week, automation starts to pay for itself. Dubsado Premier and HoneyBook Essentials are the strongest there today.
If you already live in Pixieset for galleries, try its Studio Manager before paying for anything else.
Whatever you try, test it with your real contract and a real payment schedule during the trial, then open the client side on your phone. The demo couple always signs right away. Yours won't.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best HoneyBook alternative for wedding photographers?
It depends on how much setup you want. Dubsado is best for deep customization, Studio Ninja for photography-specific features at a low price, and Bower for photographers who want the simplest path from inquiry to booked.
What is the cheapest HoneyBook alternative?
Studio Ninja Starter is cheapest at $160 a year, but it caps you at five active jobs, which most wedding photographers will outgrow. Among plans without that kind of cap, Bower's founding access is lowest at $19 a month.
Is Dubsado better than HoneyBook for photographers?
Dubsado is more customizable, and Premier costs less per year than HoneyBook Essentials ($525 vs. $588 billed annually). The trade-off is setup time. If you enjoy building workflows, Dubsado is a strong pick.
Can a wedding planner view my contract without signing it?
In Bower, yes. Add the planner as a viewer and the couple as signers, and each gets their own private link with no account needed. Other tools handle planner access differently, so test it during any trial.
Will I lose my client history if I switch?
The easiest switch is a gradual one. Finish current weddings in your old tool, start new inquiries in the new one, and bring over your contract template first. Studio Ninja offers free data migration if you want help moving existing jobs.
Try Bower free for 14 days with the contract you already send. No credit card.
