Dubsado or HoneyBook: the short answer
Pick Dubsado if you want to build a detailed, customized client workflow and don't mind spending a few evenings setting it up. Pick HoneyBook if you want a more guided setup and polished client-facing files out of the box, and you're willing to pay more for automation.
If you need automation and scheduling, compare Dubsado Premier ($525 a year) with HoneyBook Essentials ($588 a year). Dubsado costs $63 less on annual billing. Beyond price, try building your own booking process in each: the amount of setup you enjoy matters more than another feature checklist.
This comparison is published by Bower, a wedding CRM built by a working wedding filmmaker. We cover Bower at the end for photographers who find both of these to be more than they need. Pricing checked November 2, 2026.

Dubsado vs. HoneyBook pricing
On paper, the entry plans are close: Dubsado Starter is $335 a year and HoneyBook Starter is $348. But neither entry plan includes automation or scheduling, and those are usually why a photographer buys a CRM in the first place.
Once you move up, Dubsado Premier is $525 a year and HoneyBook Essentials is $588. That's a $63 difference, which is real but not decisive. HoneyBook's Premium plan, at $109 a month billed annually, is built for teams and is more than most solo wedding photographers need.
Two things the sticker price doesn't show:
- Payment processing. Both charge card processing fees on top of your subscription when clients pay online, and HoneyBook lists its card and bank-transfer rates on its pricing page. On a $6,000 wedding, 3% is $180, so offering bank transfer or checks for big payments is worth it with either tool.
- Extra users. Dubsado includes three additional users free. HoneyBook Starter is solo, Essentials allows up to two, and Premium allows more. If you have an associate shooter or an editor who needs access, that changes the math.
Compare the plan that includes what you need, not only the lowest entry price. The figures above use the published prices checked on November 2, 2026.
Setup and learning curve
This is the biggest real difference between the two, and the one most comparison pages gloss over.
Dubsado gives you forms, contracts, proposals, and workflows to configure around your process. During the trial, build your actual contract and payment sequence to see whether those controls suit you.
HoneyBook is more guided. Its Smart Files combine the proposal, contract, and invoice into one client-facing document, and there's a large library of templates to start from. Start with one of those templates and see how much you need to change before you would send it to your own couple.
The useful comparison is how much of your own process you can build comfortably. Try your contract, payment schedule, and planner handoff in both rather than assuming the longer feature list will feel better to use.
An honest test: if you've ever built a Lightroom preset system or a color-coded shot list and enjoyed it, you'll probably like Dubsado. If you'd rather pay someone than spend a Sunday on it, lean HoneyBook, or something simpler.
Automation and workflows
Both tools can automate the classic wedding sequence: send the proposal, follow up if it isn't signed, send the questionnaire a month out, remind the couple about the final payment. The difference is how much control you get and how much work it takes.
Dubsado's Premier plan includes automated workflows. Test the sequence you actually need, including the dates and client actions that should trigger each step, before assuming it can reproduce your process exactly.
HoneyBook includes automations on Essentials and up, not on Starter. Build the same sequence there and compare the setup and controls with Dubsado.
Before you pay for either, write down what you want automated. A follow-up you send twice a season may not need a workflow. A payment reminder you keep forgetting might. The value depends on the work it takes off your plate, not a particular number of weddings.
What it's like for couples and planners
The booking documents are part of your couple’s first impression of working with you. Make them easy to open, understand, and complete.
HoneyBook's client experience is its strongest selling point. Smart Files look good, they walk the couple through choosing a package, signing, and paying in one flow, and clients can open them from a direct link (HoneyBook help). If you turn on verification, clients get an emailed code before sensitive steps like signing or paying.
Dubsado's client-facing forms are fully customizable, so they can look as polished or as plain as you make them. That's a plus if you have a strong brand and the time to style everything, and a minus if you don't.
Planners are the wrinkle with both. Some planners have been vocal about the friction of working through vendor CRM projects, including one on Reddit who described clicking through look-alike HoneyBook projects to find which contract belonged to which vendor (Reddit thread). That thread is a few years old, but the core need hasn't changed: the planner wants a copy of the contract without signing it, and the couple needs to be the ones who sign.
Whichever tool you test, run that exact scenario during the trial. Send a contract to the couple with a friend playing the planner, and see what each of them has to click through.
If neither feels right: Bower
Some photographers read a comparison like this and realize the problem isn't Dubsado or HoneyBook. It's that both are built to run every corner of a service business, and they just want to book weddings.
That's who Bower is for. It was built by a wedding filmmaker who used HoneyBook, looked hard at Dubsado and 17hats, and found all of them to be more than he needed.
An inquiry becomes a Project, and the conversation, wedding details, contract, and invoices all live there. The planner gets a link to view the contract, the couple get their own links to sign, and a parent paying the retainer gets the invoice. Nobody creates an account. Inquiry acknowledgments and payment reminders go out automatically, and Bower can draft inquiry replies with AI for you to review before sending.
What it doesn't have yet: a custom workflow builder or a scheduler. Configurable automation is planned for the next major update. If you need detailed automated sequences today, Dubsado Premier or HoneyBook Essentials is the better pick.
Founding access is $19 a month for the first 100 studios, and that rate holds as long as your membership does.
Frequently asked questions
Is Dubsado or HoneyBook better for wedding photographers?
Consider Dubsado if configuring forms and workflows appeals to you. Consider HoneyBook if its Smart Files and starting templates fit the experience you want to offer. Try the same booking in both before deciding which feels easier.
Is Dubsado cheaper than HoneyBook?
Slightly. Dubsado Premier is $525 a year and HoneyBook Essentials is $588 a year, billed annually, and both include automation and scheduling. The entry plans are within about $13 a year of each other.
Is Dubsado harder to use than HoneyBook?
Dubsado gives you forms, templates, and workflows to configure around your process. Whether that feels harder depends on what you need to build. During the trial, set up one real booking rather than judging from a demo alone.
Can I try both before deciding?
Yes. Dubsado offers a 21-day trial with full Premier access and HoneyBook offers a 30-day trial, and neither asks for a credit card. Run the same real booking through both.
Is there a simpler alternative to Dubsado and HoneyBook?
Yes. Bower is built only for wedding photographers and videographers, with a focus on inquiry-to-booking and private client links that don't require accounts. It costs $19 a month for founding members.
